UM-Dearborn Wins Softball Tournament

SYLVANIA, Ohio - (Tournament Page) - After a two-day rain delay and a two-game championship, UM-Dearborn wrapped up the 2022 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Softball Tournament Championship with its first title. The Wolverines cruised through the winner's bracket of the tournament to face Aquinas in the championship game. Aquinas battled through the loser's bracket to reach the the title game. With the win, UM-Dearborn receives the league's second automatic berth to the 2022 NAIA Softball Opening Round.

Aquinas fell in the second round of the double elimination bracket before winning two games on the second day and was in the fourth quarter against Madonna before weather forced the game to be postponed. The two teams resumed the game today where Aquinas eliminated the top seed 5-3 to set up the showdown with UM-Dearborn.

The second seed had not played since May 5 when they sent Madonna to play Aquinas in the loser's bracket. The Saints handed UM-Dearborn its first loss of the tournament with a 7-3 win to prompt the if necessary game. Both teams crossed the plate in the third inning with Izzy Dawson hitting a solo homor for AQ and Amber Cheplick driving in Gina Liss with a single down the left field line.

The score remained tied until Haley Tiese was hit by a pitch. Audrey Asgarally pinch ran for Tieso and promptly stole second. Jaclyn Clark entered as a then pinch hitter and landed on second after a single and an error. Asgarally scored what would prove to be the winning run.
