All Top Seeds Advance to Semi-Finals

The Opening Round of the 2023 WHAC Women's Soccer Tournament went the way of the higher seeds as each host took care of business and shutout their opponent to advance to the semi-final round. It's the first time since 2016 that all four opening round games featured a shutout and the first time since 2020 that the top four seeds moved on. Semifinal matches will feature #1 Siena Heights hosting #4 Lawrence Tech at 5 p.m. and #2 Aquinas hosting #3 UNOH at 3 p.m.

#1 Siena Heights def. #8 UM-Dearborn 4-0

The WHAC regular season Co-Champion Saints of Siena Heights wasted little time getting on the board as they benefitted from an own goal in the sixth minute to make it 1-0. Lily Tiplady took an assist from Sarah Ammon in the 20th minute to make it 2-0. Maria Brizner added an unassisted goal in the 70th minute and Keirra Thompson buried one off the assist from Maria Brixner in the 88th minute to push the lead to 4-0 where it would stay. The loss ends a record-breaking season for UM-Dearborn who, in their sixth season as a program, qualified for the WHAC Tournament for the first time in school history. The Wolverines finish the campaign 7-9-2 overall and 3-6-2 in WHAC play. Siena Heights improves to 14-0-5 and 9-0-2 within the conference. They will host Lawrence Tech on Saturday. 

#2 Aquinas def. #7 Indiana Tech 7-0

Co-regular season champion Aquinas began its quest for a third-consecutive tournament title and did so with a dominant 7-0 win over Indiana Tech on Wednesday evening. The Saints scored five goals in the first 31 minutes of action to take a commanding lead and never looked back. The attack was balanced as seven different players found the back of the net and six different players had one or more assists. The loss brings Indiana Tech's season to a close with a 5-11-2 overall record and 3-6-2 mark in WHAC play. Aquinas improves to 15-0-3 and 9-0-2 in WHAC play. They will host #3 UNOH on Saturday at 3 p.m. 

#3 UNOH def. #6 Rochester 3-0

Playing each other for the second time in five days, #3 UNOH once again got the better of #6 Rochester thanks to a three-goal effort. On Saturday, UNOH hosted Rochester and won 3-1, today, the Racers kept the Warriors off the board, winning 3-0. The Racers scored the game winner just 1:40 into the match when Janne Esther Frauenpreiss took an assist from Anne Sjolte and made it a 1-0 game. That would be all the scoring until the 65th minute when Nanna Rosengreen scored off the Rhiannon O'Looney assist and the Racers added one more in the 70th minute when Jasmin Tadina scored off the Patricia Blazquez assist. Rochester, who earned their highest ever seeding in the WHAC tournament this year, brings its season to a close with a 12-7 overall record. UNOH improves to 12-5-2 overall and will travel to Grand Rapids to play #2 Aquinas on Saturday at 3 p.m.

#4 Lawrence Tech def. #5 Madonna 3-0

After playing to a draw just five days ago, Lawrence Tech and Madonna met again in the opening round, this time with the Blue Devils earning a 3-0 win on their home turf. It took just 53 seconds for LTU to get on the board as Jenny Dear scored on the Mikayla Waranauckas assist to make it 1-0 and they'd never look back. Hannah Pagett and Dahlia Jerovsek added goals and Waranauckas notched her second assist in the second half to make it 3-0. Madonna managed to put seven shots on frame but could not find the back of the net, bringing their season to a close with a 9-8-2 overall record. LTU improves to 11-4-3 and will travel to Siena Heights for a Saturday showdown at 5 p.m.
