2023 Women's Soccer Honors Released
The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) has released its season honors for the 2023 women's soccer season. Awards are voted on by each teams head coach.
Offensive Player of the Year - Sydney Shenk, Aquinas, F, SR
Sydney Shenk put together a stellar season for the Saints, earning her first Offensive Player of the Year award in the process. Shenk led the WHAC in points (26), was second in total goals (10), and was tied for third in assists (six). She helped Aquinas to a share of the WHAC regular season title, marking the fourth consecutive season the Saints have garnered at least a share of the regular season. Shenk is a native of Seattle, Wash.
Midfielder of the Year - Parker Cheney, Siena Heights, M, SO
A new award for the conference this season, Parker Cheney earns the Midfielder of the Year Award for her efforts in leading the Saints to a Co-Regular Season title and the #1 overall seed in the WHAC tournament. Cheney was second in the league in points (25), tied for second in goals (10) and tallied five game-winning goals on the campaign. She is a native of Brownstown, Mich.
Defensive Player of the Year - Avery Tack, Aquinas, D, SR
Avery Tack was earns Defensive Player of the Year for her efforts in leading the historic Aquinas defense which did not allow a single goal during WHAC play. In fact, they only allowed two goals all season and are currently riding a 15-match shutout streak. Tack started all 18 matches for Aquinas and added three goals, including a game winner, and two assists. Tack is a native of Grand Rapids, Mich.
Newcomer of the Year - Patricia Blazquez, UNOH, M, FR
Freshman standout Patricia Blazquez stormed onto the scene for the UNOH Racers, helping them to a 12-5-2 record and 8-2-1 mark in WHAC play, good for the #3 seed in the tournament. Blazquez is in the top ten in the WHAC in points (21) and goals (8) and has five assists. Two of her goals have been game winners. Blazquez hails from Logroao la Rioja, Spain.
Coach of the Year - Scott Oliver, Siena Heights
In his 23rd season at the healm of Siena Heights, Oliver has been named the WHAC Coach of the Year by his peers. He led the saints to an undefeated season, posting a 14-0-5 overall record and 9-0-2 mark in WHAC play, good for a share of the regular season title and the #1 seed in the tournament. This marks the third time he has won WHAC Coach of the Year honors (2002, 2009, 2023).
Coach of Character - Darus Ward, Concordia
In just his second year leading Concordia, Ward has been selected by his peers as the Coach of Charcter for 2023. The award honors coaches for their dedication to building character through sport.
In additon to the individual honors, the WHAC named its All-Conference Teams including an All-Newcomer Team, an All-Academic Team for sophomore and above in academic standing with cumulative 3.25 GPA and in attendance at nomination institution for one full year, and Champions of Character Team consisting of one member from each team who best represents the five core character values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership.
