Indiana Tech Claims Men's Soccer Tournament on PKs
LIVONIA, Mich. - (TOURNAMENT PAGE) - After 110 minutes of play including two overtimes and a 1-1 tie, second-seeded Indiana Tech claimed the 2022 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Men's Soccer Tournament on penalty kicks (6-5) over top-seeded Madonna. It's the fourth straight tournament crown for the Warriors and fifth overall.
Both Madonna (15-0-6), as the WHAC regular season, and Indiana Tech (12-2-7), as the WHAC tournament champion, will receive automatic bids into the NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship Opening Round.
Luke Jones struck first and put Tech up 1-0 n the 38th minute when he beat Madonna keeper Youssou Ouendeno from just outside the penalty area. The Warriors held the 1-0 advantage until the final 10 minutes, when Madonna's Ryo Nakajima hit the equalizer in the 81st minute.
Madonna outshot Tech 3-1 in the first overtime as neither team got a good look at the goal. The Crusaders came out aggressive in the second overtime, outshooting IT 6-2, but Jaume Salvado made two key saves to force penalty kicks. Tech outlasted MU 6-5 in the shootout with Lucca Motta, David Ambaek, Aaron Asamoah, Jaume Castells Mas, Diego Perez, and Panagiotis Georgiou all connecting, as the final Crusader effort clanged off the left upright.
