Men's Volleyball Conference Honors Released

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) released its conference honors for the 2023 men's volleyball season in conjunction with the conference tournament.

Outside hitter Eduardo Ayala of Lourdes was named Player of the Year. The junior recorded 324 kills (4.05 per set) and had a .288 attack percentage. Gray Wolves to a 15-3 league record. Gustavo Heidrich of Lawrence Tech was named Libero of the Year as the senior recorded 399 digs for a league-leading 3.76 digs per set. MVNU's Jaysen Matsumoto earned Setter of the Year with 980 assits and a 9.80 assist per set average. Newcomer of the Year went to Hasan Hadzic of Goshen as the junior had 201 kills and 47 blocks.

Doug Sherer of Mount Vernon Nazarene was awarded Coach of the Year by a vote of his colleagues after leading the Cougars to a third-place finish with a 13-5 WHAC record. Sherer also won his third Champions of Character Coach honor for his commitment to the five core character values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership. 

First Team All-Conference, Second Team All-Conference, and All-Freshman Team were awarded. All-Academic (juniors or above in academic standing with 3.25 cumulative GPA and at nominating school for one full year) and Champions of Character Team (one player from each school who best exemplifies the five core character values) were also announced.

Setter of the Year – Jaysen Matsumoto, Mount Vernon Nazarene
Newcomer of the Year - Hasan Hadzic, Goshen
Coach of the Year – Doug Sherer, Mount Vernon Nazarene
