Opening Round of Women's Soccer Tournament Sees Upsets

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - (TOURNAMENT PAGE) - The top two seeds in the 2022 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Women's Soccer Tournament advanced while the two seeds fell in the opening round. Top-seeded Aquinas eliminated No. 8 Cornerstone 3-0 while second-seeded Madonna defeated No. 7 Rochester, 6-0.

Fifth-seeded Siena Heights upended No. 4 UNOH 2-1 to advance to the semifinals and sixth-seeded Lourdes beat No. 3 Lawrence Tech 1-0 in the nightcap.

It's the first time in tournament history that both the No. 5 and No. 6 seeds advanced to the semifinals.

Semifinal matches feature Siena Heights at Aquinas and Lourdes travels to Madonna on Saturday, Nov. 5. The championship match is set for Nov. 12.

Quarterfinals - Wednesday, Nov. 2
#1 Aquinas (11-0-0, 16-2-1) def. #8 Cornerstone (2-7-2, 5-10-2), 3-0
Macy Hollingsworth scored the lone goal in the first half when she finished passes from Hannah Crum and Sydney Shenk into the top right of the goal. The Saints found the net twice more in the second half when Sydney Shenk finished Crum's shot off the crossbar and Brittney Carter scored after a blocked shot from Katelyn Kahael at the 79:13 mark. Kayla Shuk recorded the shutout with help from the Saints defense as the line held Cornerstone to no shots on goal. Hope Steenwyk finished with 10 saves for the Golden Eagles.

#5 Siena Heights (5-2-4, 11-4-4) def. #4 UNOH (6-3-2, 8-9-2), 2-1
UNOH got the quick start when Nanna Rosengreen laid up to Andra Benkens who finished under the keeper from the top of the box in the fourth minute. SHU answered in the 25th minute on a shot from Lily Tiplady on a pass from Erin Tyson and Emily Broman. Olivia Emert scored the game-winner at the 60:51 mark off an assist from Broman. Caitlyn Harwood made five saves in goal for SHU while Ilke Brandsma recored one for the Racers.

#6 Lourdes (6-4-1, 9-4-4) def. #3 Lawrence Tech (5-1-5, 6-5-5), 1-0
Lourdes' Emily Johnson scored what turned out to be the game-winner at the 28:24 mark when she headed in a ball from 20 yards out off a pass from Annah Zacerkowny. Lawrence Tech applied pressure in the second half. After allowing six shots in the first, the Blue Devils clamped down on defense by not allowing a shot in the second half while taking 11 on offense, but Emmy Rodger recorded three saves to preserve the shutout. Gabi Nelson made one save after allowing one goal for LTU.

#2 Madonna (9-1-1, 14-4-1) def. #7 Rochester (4-6-1, 8-8-2), 6-0
Sydnie Voss made it 1-0 off an assist by Abby Werthman in the third minute and Olivia Brannon found the back of the net off a pass from Karina Arnold three minutes later to set the tone for Madonna.Holly McManus joined the scoring party while Gabriella Sapia added the assist and Voss scored her second goal of the half for a 4-0 lead. McManus scored again with the help of Kyla Fraser in the 55th minute before Fraser scored a goal of her own off a pass from Maya Spano. Brooke Bruletti made a pair of saves to preserve the shutout while Rochester used two goalies in Rachel Mccleese and Annabelle Yeloushan who made five saves between them.
