Cornerstone Continues Historic Run - Wins Women's Tennis Tournament

MAUMEE, Ohio - (TOURNAMENT PAGE) - Cornerstone's historic season continues as the Golden Eagles won their first-ever Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Women's Tennis Tournament title. Playing at Shadow Valley Tennis Club, top-seeded Cornerstone defeated defending tournament champion and No. 2 seed Indiana Tech 4-3. CU previoulsy won its first-ever regular-season championship in the sport.

Indiana Tech won the doubles point as Criss D. Echavarria and Valentine Rodriguez beat Renata Castillo and Isabella Herrera at the No. 3 spot. Roshne Arunkumar and Ana Gomez then took the No. 2 spot with a 6-3 win over Sarah Daza and Ximena Matamoros.  

Sophie Smith of Cornerstone won the first singles match at No. 1 with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Thaina Carvalho. Fresh off the loss in doubles play, Daza put Cornerstone up 2-1 with a 6-0, 6-3 win at the No. 4 over Roshne Arunkumar.

Isabella Herrera gave Cornerstone some breathing room as she finished next with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6 over Valentina Rodriguez. Echavarria earned a point for Indiana Tech as she took the No. 3 point whne Alayna Bowman was forced to retire. Matamoros beat Abigail Simms 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot for fourth Cornerstone point. In final match at the No. 5 singles, Ana Gomez picked up the third point for Indiana Tech with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win at the No. 5 spot. 

With the tournament championship, Cornerstone receives the league's automatic berth to the NAIA National Championship May 16-20 in Mobile, Ala. It will be the first national tournament appearance for the Golden Eagles.
